GRAMBLING, LA – After taking down Southern in the first game of the lone matchup of the season, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women’s basketball team kept Grambling to just 7.7 percent from deep in a 2-for-26 shooting performance on the way to a 56-49 victory against the Tigers on the road Monday to complete the sweep of the Louisiana schools in the conferenxe.
The Golden Lions (10-10, 5-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Zaay Green, who secured a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Kaila Walker tacked on 11 points and Jelissa Reese helped out with 10 points and six rebounds.
UAPB pulled down 51 rebounds in Monday’s game compared to Grambling’s 46, led by Coriah Beck’s 10 boards. The Golden Lions also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 11 rebounds into five second chance points.
UAPB’s defense held Grambling to only 7.7 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 26.2 percent from the field. The Golden Lions also limited DeMya Young to 0-of-7 shooting from downtown and two points in the game.
How It Happened
After falling behind 9-6, UAPB went on a 6-0 run with 3:17 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Demetria Shephard, to take a 12-9 lead. The Golden Lions then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 12-11 advantage. UAPB relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 12 points.
Grambling fought back to tie the game at 20-20 before UAPB went on an 11-0 run starting at the 4:19 mark in the second period to take a 31-20 lead. The Tigers cut into that lead, but the Golden Lions still enjoyed a 32-26 advantage heading into halftime. UAPB forced four Grambling turnovers in the period and turned them into seven points.
After intermission, UAPB held on to its advantage and owned a 41-38 lead heading into the fourth quarter. UAPB scored two fast break points in the quarter.
The Tigers proceeded to tie things up at 47-47 before UAPB went on a 5-0 run to seize a 52-47 lead with 2:09 to go in the contest. The Golden Lions kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 56-49 win. UAPB fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 15 points.
